Africa will be greatly represented at the prestigious event with singer and humanitarian Yvonne Chaka Chaka and social activist Ilwad Elman being awarded with International Global Good Star and Power Awards. The South African songstress, fondly known as the Princess of Africa, has long been synonymous with excellence in the music industry, locally and internationally. Her lyrics resonated with freedom fighters during the apartheid years. After democracy, her focus shifted when one of her backup singers died of malaria. “She began the Princess of Africa Foundation, where she worked to eradicate the effects of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV and to carry out community and social charity works,” said BET. “There, Chaka Chaka focuses on healthcare, education and sanitation.”
Eight leading African artists including AKA, Nasty C, Babes Wodumo, Wizkid, Tekno, Mr Eazi, Davido and Stonebwoy will all vie for the Best International Act: Africa category.
“Amazulu” hitmaker Amanda Black and Tanzanian performer Ray Vanny are nominated for Viewer’s Choice Award “Best International Act”, in conjunction with performers from the UK, South Korea, Canada, Australia and Jamaica. Recall that Beyonce leads with seven nominations, followed by Bruno Mars with five and Solange, Chance the Rapper and Migos with four nominees apiece.  Comedian Leslie Jones  will host the BET Awards for the first time. BET Network will air the show live on Tuesday, June 27, on BET (DStv channel 129)

I wrote JAMB and I was Jammed – Bisola

Bisola Aiyeola of Big Brother Naija has said that she was Jammed when she wrote the Joint Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB).

Bisola
Bisola a recent interview with NAIJ, the former BBNaija spoke about problems she encountered while trying to get a university degree said ‘I wrote Jamb and I was jammed. It’s not like I did not try.

‘I tried so many schools all over the country. It’s not that I wasn’t passing the exams; it was a problem of not getting funds. I did not have money to pay for certain things.

‘I was even duped when I tried to enter LASU. That pulled me back and all this just made me discouraged. I also tried National Open University (NOUN) and you know it is very easy to get into NOUN, and at certain times you needed to pay certain fees.

‘Believe me; it was difficult to raise N15, 000 at that time. I just decided that all of my energy let me use it into using my talent to feed myself.’

Also speaking about hunger and hardship experiences she said ‘Sometimes when there was no food to eat at home, I take my daughter to my neighbor’s house under the pretext of watching television and stylishly feed my daughter and myself.

‘That’s why I can relate to people because when you are down, you are down. But one cannot just stay down. I would love to help people get out of this type of situation.

Evans and kidnappers of Nigeria’s values

DESPITE our desire to “pray our problems away” in Nigeria, until we accept to take concrete action in regards to certain issues, we will continue to fall short of our hopes and expectations of progress. Many proverbs around the world exemplify the need to accompany prayer with labour and perseverance, such as “trust in God but tie your camel” or the Biblical: “He who works his land will have food but he who chases fantasies lacks judgement” (Proverbs 12:11) and “Indeed Allah will not change the conditions of a population until they change what is in themselves” (Quran 13:11).

Not only do we in Nigeria chase fantasies and expect manna to drop from heaven and refuse to see (or act upon) our collective faults, we have whole heartedly embraced dubious characters as the taste makers and influencers of our society. They sit on the front pews in church, no matter what the allegations stacked against them are, they are invited to seminars and conferences to proffer solutions to socio-economic problems they create and are on the covers of magazines despite having never worked an honest day in their lives. Evans’ picture could have been included in any of the popular Sunday magazines in Nigeria. His son or daughter’s graduation could have aired on television. This is how empty and decrepit, devoid of meaning our media has become. He might have been given a chieftaincy title in his village and the pictures could have appeared everywhere, including social media. This is how empty our traditional institutions, meant to recognise truly successful and productive individuals, have become.

Evans might even have run for governor or senator at some point, had he not been caught and this for me is the most horrifying part of the story. There are already so many “Evans’s” in Nigerian politics. Men and women of unexplained wealth who are rumoured to have made their money in the most dubious of circumstances. Why are we surprised that they don’t pursue power in order to make a difference in our lives but rather to enrich themselves further? People would have voted for Evans, encouraged by his hand-outs, silenced into submission. They would even have held placards in his defence, even if audio tapes featuring him describing his misdeeds surfaced or if the EFCC arrested him and charged him to court. Some people would talk about his human rights being infringed even if there was proof that he had bribed the court to obtain freedom.

So, a man who started out as a kidnapper would suddenly become blameless, a good Christian, etc., by virtue of joining politics and “sharing” money with a few loud mouths with the clout to defend him while he would have continued to hurt the masses. Evans could have embezzled his state’s budget, or been caught doing so and some people would still say “we are marginalised. We need Evans to get into power at the federal level”, forgetting that he (or those like him) are the true cause of marginalisation and poverty rather than ethnicity. The political Evans’s rob their states blind yet always find people to excuse their behaviour, even when they bribe judges and buy elections. It’s a pathetic situation, one where the same group of people prospers and profits while ironically, those who should hate the Evans’s of this world, are the first to hail him.

This is why when the Evans story broke and he was called a “genius” I was saddened but not surprised. Our misuse of the term “genius” itself is telling. A genius is a brilliant mind, someone to be copied, a person whose “flair” for business, for example, is admired, or whose artistic gifts are being praised. It is a supreme irony to claim that anyone has a knack for kidnap ping, which is what calling Evans a genius means. Is kidnapping now an occupation on the same level of comparison as journalist, doctor or teacher? There cannot (or should not), by definition, by virtue of basic decency and respect for those lives Evans has traumatised, be any “genius” or outstanding ability associated with the idea of kidnapping because it is neither a vocation nor a craft   with a measurable, appreciable or praise-worthy skill set given that it is illegal (not to talk of immoral) to hold anyone against their will in exchange for a ransom. No one is born a kidnapper, unlike being born with the talents of a journalist, artist etc. One can’t say “Genius billionaire kidnapper” the same way one would say “genius billionaire entrepreneur!” without acknowledging the folly of the system that birthed such a senseless thought process. At least not in a society which hopes to function normally.

I’ve been embarrassed by questions from expatriates following the story. How does such a man extorting huge sums in foreign currency just casually live in an affluent suburb known to all, they asked. It wouldn’t be possible in the United States, the United Kingdom or other such countries.

How could he have been donating to charities and lavishly participating in the life of his community, giving gifts, tithes etc., without questions being asked as to the source of his funds? First of all, in most countries, anyone who carries cash above a certain amount is a suspect.

Critical thinking

But in a country where billions of Naira sit in apartments or sewers, I suppose we have lost the ability to be shocked by such, and more notably, greed makes us accept any and everything without question. Why is money the only acceptable form of success in Nigeria? What happened to intellectualism and critical thinking? What happened to asking questions, digging deep and questioning the status quo?

The military has a lot to answer for. They destroyed our universities, sent many of our intellectuals abroad and made Nigerians afraid to think. This is perhaps their greatest legacy. Evans and the landlords or warlords of the Nigerian political system are the military’s gift: they normalise crime. It’s largely the fault of military rule if today anything goes in Nigeria but when do we begin to do something about it? The tragedy here is that Evans himself is a victim of the system. No one dreams of becoming a kidnapper; the system and its lack of opportunity turns many youths into criminals who grow in confidence and daring, till they eventually join the ultimate gang of kidnappers, the Nigerian political elite, first as a tout or junior officer till they call the shots themselves. When we’re done “ooing” and “aahing” over Evans’ riches, when we’re done defending the same politicians and former Evans’s holding us back, then we’ll have a country again.

EFCC

NIGERIA is held hostage by kidnappers, the sort even Evans fears: blackmailers, alleged anticipatory looters rumoured to declare false assets in preparation for more hostage taking.

The EFCC should engage private lawyers, if it must; many are for sale, bought by the highest bidder, no matter what side of good and evil the client or his narrative lies.

Facts you need to know about N-Power

Skills and knowledge are the driving forces of economic growth and social development. Despite the current high level of unemployment, harnessing Nigeria’s young demography through appropriate skill development efforts provides an opportunity to achieve inclusion and productivity within the country. Large-scale skill development is the main policy thrust of the N-Power Programme.

N-Power is also linked to the Federal Government’s policies in the economic, employment and social development arenas. N-Power addresses the challenge of youth unemployment by providing a structure for large scale and relevant work skills acquisition and development while linking its core and outcomes to fixing inadequate public services and stimulating the larger economy. The modular programmes under N-Power will ensure that each participant will learn and practice most of what is necessary to find or create work. The N-Power Volunteer Corp involves a massive deployment of 500,000 trained graduates who will assist to improve the inadequacies in our public services in education, health and civic education. Some of these graduates will also help in actualising Nigeria’s economic and strategic aspirations of achieving food security and self-sufficiency.

N-Power will also be a platform for diversifying the economy. N-Power is preparing young Nigerians for a knowledge economy where, equipped with world-class skills and certification, they become innovators and movers in the domestic and global markets. Nigeria will have a pool of software developers, hardware service professionals, animators, graphic artists, building services professionals, artisans and others. N-Power also focuses on providing our non-graduates with relevant technical and business skills that enhance their work outlook and livelihood.

In sum, N-Power is segmented as follows:

N-Power Volunteer Corps- 500,000 graduates
N-Power Knowledge – 25,000 non-graduates
N-Power Build- 75,000 non-graduates

WHO CAN APPLY
N-Power aspires to provide a platform where most Nigerians can access skills acquisition and development. At this time however, the initial modular programmes in N-Power are designed for Nigerian citizens between the ages of 18 and 35. You will need to meet the minimum requirements (if any) for your respective programme. Generally, selection is based:

1. on your expression of a genuine interest in whichever area you decide;
2. passing the relevant tests;
3. your willingness to push yourself beyond your comfort zone; and
4. ability to show a flair to develop all the skills you need to be the best you can be.

N-Power Programmes

N-Power Teach

N-Power Teach Volunteers will help improve basic education delivery in Nigeria. N-Power Teach Volunteers will be deployed as teacher assistants in primary schools around Nigeria. They will not replace the current teachers, but will work as support teachers across Nigeria, assisting with teaching, school management and other functions within the schools. Where possible, they will also assist in taking basic education to children in marginalised communities.

N-Power Health

N-Power Health Volunteers will help improve and promote preventive healthcare in their communities to vulnerable members of the society including pregnant women and children and to families and individuals.

N-Power Agro

N-Power Agro Volunteers will provide advisory services to farmers across the country. They will disseminate the knowledge that has been aggregated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in the area of extension services. They will also gather data of Nigeria’s agriculture assets.

Sean Diddy Combs now world’s richest entertainer

Rapper and music producer Sean “Diddy” Combs was named the world’s highest-paid entertainer on Monday, ousting pop singer Taylor Swift who fell to 49th place on the Forbes annual list.

Sean Diddy Combs aka Puff Dady and Jay Z
Beyonce moved into the second spot with $105 million, courtesy of her best-selling “Lemonade” album and world tour, while British author J.K. Rowling ($95 million) moved back into the top three thanks largely to her “Harry Potter” spinoff movie franchise “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”
Combs, 47, earned an estimated $130 million in the 12 months ended June 1, 2017, Forbes said. It attributed the big payout to his Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour, earnings from his Sean John clothing line, and his partnership with Ciroc vodka.
Last year, Combs came in 22nd on the list in a year when Swift bested all-comers with $170 million after her best-selling “1989” album and world tour.
This year, the 27-year-old country singer-turned-pop star, with no new album or tour, saw her paycheck dip to $44 million, Forbes estimated.
Newcomers in 2017 include model Kylie Jenner, the 19-year-old half-sister of reality TV star Kim Kardashian, who earned $41 million, and U.S. radio and television personality Steve Harvey with $42.5 million
Forbes compiles the list estimating pre-tax earnings, before deducting fees for managers, based on data from Nielsen, touring trade publication Pollstar, movie database IMDB.com, and interviews with industry experts and celebrities themselves.
The world’s top 100 celebrities earned a cumulative $5.1 billion – about the same as last year, Forbes said.

We didn’t conduct ‘assessment poll’ on Buhari’s administration — APC

ABUJA— The All Progressives Congress, APC, has dissociated itself from an online opinion survey on the second anniversary of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“For the records, the APC has not conducted or authorised any assessment poll on the President Buhari administration. The media and indeed the general public are advised to ignore the questionable poll,” said party spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement.

Using the twitter handle, @APCNigeria, the survey had sought the opinion of Nigerians on the successes or otherwise of the Buari administration.

“Two years on: What’s your assessment of the APC-led administration in Nigeria? Kindly vote and RT,” the party had purportedly asked Nigerians, providing four options; Poor, Average, Excellent and Indifferent.

The online poll recorded 14, 532 votes with 54 per cent of the respondents rating the administration poor; 33 percent rated the administration as average, while 10 percent voted for excellent. Three per cent of the respondents were indifferent.

However, in the statement issued yesterday in Abuja, APC said: “The twitter handle, ‘@APCNigeria’ with which the so-called ‘assessment poll’ was purportedly conducted is not the official twitter account of the APC.

“Unfortunately, media organisations that published the story did not verify from the party’s publicity department the authenticity of the unauthorised poll credited to the party.

“Recall that the party had on February 21, 2016 distanced itself from the twitter handle, ‘@APCNigeria’ following a similar false report credited to the party on the outcome of Benue South Senatorial rerun election.”

Vanguard checks revealed that the twitter handle,”@APCNigeria” is managed by one Philip Obin.

It became popular and was mistaken as an official APC media broadcast platform in the lead up to the 2015 general elections for regularly broadcasting news and activities of the APC.

Cardiff on alert after Manchester horror

Saturday’s Champions League final between Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid and Gianluigi Buffon’s Juventus will take place amid taut security following last week’s fatal terror attack in Manchester.

The suicide attack at Manchester Arena, which left 22 dead and scores injured, means vigilance will be heightened, but unprecedented security measures were already in place for the game.

“The security operation for the four-day period covering June 1-4 will be the biggest ever seen for a sporting event in the UK,” says the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

Most noticeably, the retractable roof of the Principality Stadium will be closed, making it the first Champions League final to be played in indoor conditions.

ADVERTISING
inRead invented by Teads
The FAW said security was the “primary factor” in the decision to close the roof, although there is no evidence of a security threat against the final.

Fans will not be allowed to bring bags into the stadium, which will have a reduced capacity of 66,000 for the match, and have been encouraged to use left-luggage facilities in the city centre.

They have also been urged to arrive no later than two hours before kick-off to allow time for security checks.

Around 1,500 police officers are due to be on duty in the Welsh capital over the weekend, with local units supported by specialist officers from other areas of the United Kingdom.

As the Principality Stadium sits slap-bang in the centre of Cardiff, there will be road closures in place around the city centre on the day of the match.

There will also be tight security around the four-day ‘UEFA Champions Festival’, which takes place on the picturesque seafront at Cardiff Bay and is expected to attract over 200,000 people.

Events include a match between retired greats on Friday, due to take place on a floating pitch, and a DJ set by former Valencia and Barcelona midfielder Gaizka Mendieta on Saturday.

– Threat level downgraded –

Restrictions have been placed on water travel in the Cardiff Bay area and on Cardiff’s River Taff, which streams right past the stadium.

“This will be the biggest security operation undertaken in the city since the (2014) NATO summit,” South Wales Police assistant chief constable Richard Lewis told AFP.

“The security team has liaised with all concerned partners in relation to these measures, which are deemed an appropriate action in the circumstances.”

European governing body UEFA says fan zones will remain open under “strict security measures”.

But as for previous finals, the match will not be shown live on big screens in fan-designated areas.

Madrid talisman Ronaldo cancelled a sponsor event in London last Saturday after the UK’s terror threat level was temporary upgraded to “critical”, meaning an attack may have been imminent.

The threat level has now been downgraded to “severe”.

There was visibly tighter security at several major sporting events that took place across the UK last weekend, including the FA Cup final and the English Premiership rugby final.

Less than two months ago, the team bus of German team Borussia Dortmund was targeted by three roadside bomb blasts prior to a Champions League home game with Monaco.

That attack, which left defender Marc Bartra with a fractured wrist, is believed to have been carried out by a man who hoped to profit from a fall in Dortmund’s share price.

Stakeholders seek sale of NSE shares by way of public offer

FOLLOWING the approval given to the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE to commence move for the demutualisation of the exchange, a section of stakeholders in the nation’s capital market is canvassing that the eventual sale of its shares to the public should be done by way of public offer.

The stakeholders said that the NSE should ensure that money bags do not hijack the bourse to the detriment of all Nigerians, as Initial Public Offer, IPO will be the best option to demutualise the exchange , since it would give everybody equal opportunity to participate.

Demutualisation refers to the conversion of a non-profit, mutually owned company, such as the NSE in this case, to a profit entity limited by shares. Demutualisation segregates ownership and management from the trading rights of the members of an exchange.

Speaking to Vanguard on the demutualisation of the NSE, Mr. Boniface Okezie, Chairman, Progressive Shareholders Association of Nigeria, PSAN said “It is a good development that the NSE is going public, so we implore the Council of the NSE to make sure that there is transparency in the sale of the shares to the public. We don’t want a situation where few people will hijack the shares because as it is now only few wealthy people control it.

“If the exchange goes public it would attract more retail investors into the market. In fact, we want the exchange to be all inclusive and transparent enough to accommodate all classes of the people in the country.”

Mr. Oderinde Taiwo, National Co-ordinator, Proactive Shareholders Association of Nigeria, PROSAN, said, “We want the exchange to be transparent enough when the time comes for the public offering of the shares. We don’t want a situation where money bags will hijack the exchange. It is a step in the right direction that members of the NSE had taken. Demutualising the exchange would significantly increase confidence of local and foreign investors and enhance activities in the stock market. Once the exchange is demutualised it will open a new vista of trading at the NSE.”

Mr. Sola Oni, Stockbroker /CEO, SOFUNIX Investment and Communications Limited, said “Demutualization of the NSE had been put on the front burner since the era of the former Director General, Professor Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke. It is an innovative approach to running a modern stock market. I think, of all the members of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), only eight including our market are still operating like clubs.”

First robotic cop joins Dubai police

After bringing in Lamborghinis and Ferraris to patrol roads, Dubai police have enrolled a robotic officer, the first in a unit that aims to make up a quarter of the force by 2030.

The robotic cop stood to attention Wednesday night at the foot of Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, as tourists and passersby snapped selfie souvenir photos by its side.
Wearing a police cap and moving on wheels, the robot features a computer touch-screen on its chest that can be used to report a crime or inquire about speeding tickets.

“Our aim is to raise the number of robots to 25 percent of the police force by 2030,” said Brigadier Khaled al-Razzooqi, head of Smart Services at Dubai police.

The robot, to be deployed mainly at tourist spots, is equipped with a camera that transmits live images to the operations room and it can identify suspects wanted by police.

The main purpose is to “find a new way to deal with people”, said Razzooqi, while acknowledging that robots could not replace humans on tasks such as making arrests.

Police in Dubai, a growing tourism hub which attracted nearly 15 million visitors last year, have previously attracted media attention by parading expensive luxury cars as patrol vehicles.

Lebanon bans Wonder Woman film over Israeli actress

Lebanon has banned the screening of Hollywood blockbuster “Wonder Woman” because of its lead actress Gal Gadot, who served in the Israeli military, on the grounds of a long-standing boycott of the Jewish state.
The decision sparked a social media frenzy, with some Lebanese mocking the authorities but others welcoming it as part of a campaign to isolate Israel.

An official with Lebanon’s General Security told AFP the interior ministry has “decided to ban the screening of this film based on the recommendation of the Arab League’s Israel Boycott Office”.

Lebanon and Israel are still technically in a state of war, and the Arab League maintains a Damascus-based office responsible for coordinating a regional boycott of the Jewish state.

Lebanon’s economy and culture ministry, which oversees the boycott of Israeli products locally, recommended the film be banned after last year requesting the Arab League office issue a blanket ban on all the work of the 32-year-old actress.

Gadot, who like most young Israelis did military service, made headlines in 2014 for a Facebook post defending the Jewish state’s blistering offensive in the Gaza Strip run by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

“I am sending my love and prayers to my fellow Israeli citizens,” she wrote.

“Especially to all the boys and girls who are risking their lives protecting my country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas, who are hiding like cowards behind women and children.”

The Lebanese ban has sparked a storm on social media, with some welcoming the decision which led to advertising posters for Wonder Woman across the capital vanishing overnight.

“The campaign to boycott supporters of Israel in Lebanon has succeeded,” said the Arabic-language Facebook page of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, which seeks to isolate Israel over its occupation of the Palestinian territories.

But many in Lebanon mocked the decision as censorship or a waste of time, pointing out the film could be viewed online.

“Liberating Palestine one movie at a time. #LiveLoveCensorship,” wrote the Stop Cultural Terrorism in Lebanon group, which promotes freedom of expression.

Blogger Elie Fares accused the government of inconsistency, pointing out that several of Gadot’s movies have aired in Lebanon in past years.

“In typical Lebanese fashion and because we definitely have our priorities in order, Lebanon’s government decided to rise up from its slumber and resist, even though the movie has been announced for over three years now,” he wrote on his “A Separate State of Mind” blog.

“The fact of the matter is that if you have a problem with the content of a movie, the actor or actress leading it or anything pertaining to it… Simply don’t go watch it,” he added.

“Call for a boycott, but you sure as hell have no right in making sure no one else gets to watch it too.”

Lebanon is considered one of the most liberal countries in the Arab world, with a thriving arts scene.

But its interior ministry’s censorship bureau occasionally bans content considered to incite confessional dissent, attacking morals or state authority, or to reflect Israeli propaganda.

So far, Lebanon appears to be the only Arab country to order a ban on Wonder Woman, which remains scheduled for release across the region including in Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia later this month.
